Zac Efron and Nikki Blonsky will head for swinging London in the sequel to HAIRSPRAY, which will be set during the turbulent late-60s. John Waters has come up with a story that continues the political theme, and director Adam Shankman is back on board as well. Samuel L Jackson will play a Boston firefighter who, after an on-the-job injury, becomes addicted to painkillers in THE FALLEN. Brian Goodman (What Doesn't Kill You) is writing and directing. Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, Liam Neeson, Lily Tomlin, Betty White and Cloris Leachman will voice characters for the English soundtrack to PONYO ON THE CLIFF BY THE SEA, the latest Japanese anime from Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away). It's about a 5-year-old boy and a goldfish who longs to become human. Tom Selleck, Ted Danson and Steve Guttenberg may be back for THREE MEN AND A BRIDE, a second sequel to Three Men and a Baby (which is based on a French trilogy). Although, as it's been 18 years since the last film, perhaps it should be Three Men and a Great-granddaughter. Meanwhile, Guttenberg is also planning to return for an eighth POLICE ACADEMY movie, and not only is he planning to direct the film, but he hopes to bring previous cast members along, including Kim Cattrall and Sharon Stone. Work is underway on the biopic SERGE GAINSBOURG: VIE HEROIQUE, about the iconic French musician-filmmaker who grew up in Nazi-occupied Paris. Graphic novelist Joann Sfar is directing the film, which will star Eric Elmosnino as Gainsbourg, and Laetitia Casta, Anna Mouglalis and Mylene Jampanoi as some of the famous women in his life. Italian filmmaker Gabriele Muccino (Seven Pounds) is returning to Italy to make a 10-years-later sequel to his 2001 hit The Last Kiss (remade as a 2006 Zach Braff comedy). Stars Stefano Accorsi and Giovanna Mezzogiorno will be back as the now 40-something slackers. James Jagger (23-year-old son of Mick) will make his movie debut in the biopic VIVALDI: THE RED PRIEST, which is now filming in Venice. He'll play one of the composer's students. Rising Japanese stars Kenichi Matsuyama (Death Note) and Maki Horikita (Always) will appear in the English-language drama LOST MEMORY, about a teen girl who loses four years of her memories after a bad fall, then falls in love with the first boy she sees. Hans Canosa (Conversations With Other Women) is writing and directing. And after running out of video games, filmmakers are turning to board games for inspiration. Hot on the heels of the OUIJA BOARD and BATTLESHIP movies comes news that Ridley Scott is working on a MONOPOLY film, which he's planning as a futuristic real estate thriller. Pamela Pettler (Corpse Bride) is working on the script.
Michael Cera will star with his girlfriend Charlyne Yi (Knocked Up) in PAPER HEARTS, an offbeat comedy-documentary based on their real-life relationship. The low-budget film is being produced by Judd Apatow and directed by Nicholas Jasenovec. Eddie Izzard and Brian Dennehy have joined Liev Schreiber, Helen Hunt and Carla Gugino in EVERY DAY, about a married man who's seduced by a colleague. Writer-director Richard Levine (Nip/Tuck) is currently filming in New York. Rosie Perez, Craig Ferguson and Arsenio Hall will join Christina Ricci to voice characters THE HERO OF COLOR CITY, about a group of crayons trying to stop a villain from erasing the colour from their world. Anna Kendrick (Twilight) and Vera Farmiga will join George Clooney in the comedy UP IN THE AIR, about a guy who's job is to fly around the country to give people the sack. Jason Reitman is writing and directing. Timothy Olyphant will star in a remake of George Romero's horror movie THE CRAZIES, about a small town infected with a madness-inducing biological agent when a plane crashes nearby. Breck Eisner is directing. Dolph Lundgren may reteam with Sylvester Stallone for action movie THE EXPENDABLES, costarring Jason Statham and Jet Li. Written and directed by Stallone, it's about a team of mercenaries trying to overthrow a South American dictator. Amber Valletta, George Lopez and Billy Ray Cyrus have joined Jackie Chan in THE SPY NEXT DOOR, a comedy about a guy trying to protect his neighbours' kids from a team of government agents. Director Brian Levant is currently filming in Albuquerque. Johnny Hallyday and Sylvie Testud are heading to Hong Kong to star in Johnnie To's next film, the action thriller VENGEANCE, about a French chef who used to be an assassin and is chasing the gang who murdered his daughter's family. Daphne Zuniga will star in and produce THE SCENE, a satire of New York's media party society centring on a cynical TV producer. It's based on the play by Theresa Rebeck, and costars Heather Gordon and Stephen Barker Turner. And Paul Schrader heading to Mumbai to write and direct the Bollywood action movie EXTREME CITY, about an American who travels to India to solve a kidnapping, then gets caught up in a mob plot.
