In 1999 a group of umrats went to New Zealand during the UK summer and stayed in a lovely place called Nelson.   It was a bit quiet, but we made a few new friends and ate lots of pancakes. This is a map of Nelson, a region and a port town on the North coast of the South Island.

This is Nelson

For more information about Nelson try these links:

For general news about New Zealand visit www.kiwinews.co.nz  , who will also send out the news  to you weekly by email.

If you have a look in at the newsgroup  news:nz.reg.nelson.general you may well find that some of the umrats are still there after all this time, but plans are already well laid to leave the area.
Rather than flit about the world arbitrarily, it was suggested that we form a conga and trail about adjacent areas and groups until we reach the final destination.

We still haven't decided what the route will be but we have a rough idea where we want to end up; if it happens though, I for one will be surprised. Should you wish to make any routing suggestions, or just tag along and see the world, then why not join us in the newsgroups or send us an e-mail to if you prefer, c/o andyrobts@zetnet.co.

After prevaricating for the usual extended period the Cyber Conga finally got underway with the following post from young Kelvin on Leap Year Day, 29th Feb 2000

You are now a witness to the spandabulous
pneumonium known as -
. .
---The_Trans-World~Cyber_Conga-~ :-)

This record-breaking event began in Nelson,
New Zealand on Leap Year Day 2,000 and is
scheduled to terminate at a surprise location
in North America sometime before the end of
the new millenium.

Rules:

1. Once you join, you cannot get off. After reading
this, you have now joined.

2. No more than 4 groups in the newsgroups line.

3. New groups may only be added singly to the right
of the newsgroup line and only on a Tuesday or
Saturday. The left most group should be dropped to
make room. If you get left behind, or splits
occur, please follow behind conga-leader@the-front

4 Travel should be via physically adjacent regions as
far as possible. Oceans may be crossed by means
of non-geographical or transport groups but only
as far as the nearest land-mass.

That initial post is archived at Deja.com so you can join the end of the Conga by following the next link , Deja.com message: The_Trans-World~Cyber_Conga  click "thread" and then follow on down.

From Nelson the conga moved straight to Christchurch, (Our first mistake, as the newsgroup
had been renamed to Canterbury ) and then on down the East Coast to Dunedin
and the Southland .

If your not sure where these places are, here is a map of New Zealand.

New Zealand (map)

Another map which shows the Districts of New Zealand with clickable links to a tour of each region is available here  - That one has been a valuable reference source for the cyber conga travellers.

And now here's a list of the newsgroups taken in by the main route of the conga so that you can catch up with the front of the line, should you feel the need.

EARTHQUAKE !!

A series of Earthquakes occurred in the Wellington area, just as we conga'd through. Details of New Zealand's precarious position and waiting for "the big one" at www.gns.cri.nz

Dinner Party in Auckland

Some of the regulars of nz.reg.auckland.general held a dinner party at the same time as the conga party passed through. Peter Hesketh cheekily asked for an invite and the hosts kindly laid a couple of place settings for their virtual guests. As is customary as such meetings, a set of photos were taken but this is the only one which captured any of the invisible visitors.
