Nichol crewed for Dennis on Day One

Lasham Regionals Competition 2002

The IBM Gliding Club competed in Class B (under 100 handicap rating) of the Lasham Regionals, from 29 June - 7 July.

Weather was poor until the final weekend and four days were 'scrubbed' (no contest could be set). Cross-country flying was also affected by the severely glider-unfriendly state of the fields, forcing many people to divert to airfields!

The Team finished in 7th place, our best position to date and one we feel we can (and should) improve upon with more practice!

Dennis Powell came 8th on the first day and 5th on the second contest day, putting the team in a good position.
Nichol Riggott excelled himself by finishing 2nd on day three. It was his first 'area task', but even so he did very well, landing finally at Chalgrove, beaten only by a pilot who risked damaging his glider by pressing on until coming to rest in a very small field! Well done Nichol, both for skill and good airmanship!
Mike Evans flew on day four, in the first good conditions. He finished tenth, taking under four hours to complete the 280k task to Sackville (8m N of Bedford) and achieving our highest day score of 822 points.
Nichol gained more success on the sixth and last day, in possibly even better conditions, finishing 15th with 624 points - his first 300k and Gold Distance on the task to Northampton and Grafham Water.

Before next year we WILL get in the necessary practice!
