| The Shetland Fishermen's Association (S.F.A) is a long established
organisation which represents all full-time fishermen in Shetland. There are currently 120
member vessels in the S.F.A.. The policy of the S.F.A is determined by an Executive
Committee of 18 fishermen who are elected annually. The S.F.A. acts primarily as a pressure group, representing the views of its members on fisheries matters to Government bodies at all levels. The S.F.A. is therefore actively involved in discussions with the E.C. Commission, the European Parliament, the UK Government, Department of Agriculture, Environment & Fisheries for Scotland and the Shetland Islands Council. Since the advent of the North Sea oil industry, the S.F.A has been involved in negotiations and discussions with various oil companies. The S.F.A. continues to operate a successful Group Life Assurance scheme on behalf of most of its members. The S.F.A. is also a member of both the Scottish Fishermen's Federation (which is the political voice of the Scottish fishing industry) and the Shetland Islands Council Fisheries Working Group. Together with the Shetland Fish Processors Association and the Shetland Salmon Farmers Association, the S.F.A. publishes its own successful monthly newspaper - the Shetland Fishing News. |
