FIRST HERRING LANDED

THE first herring for the 1998 season was landed in Shetland on Wednesday, 8 July. The Crossfjord and the Grateful each landed about 100 tonnes at the Shetland Catch factory in Lerwick. The Crossfjord returned the following afternoon with a larger catch.

The season usually begins earlier but has become later with each consecutive year. It was no surprise to Jim Ridland, Operations Manager at Shetland Catch, that the herring did not arrive until the second week of July. The first fish landed was small but is expected to be larger as the season progresses.
