For those that require a "natural" product,
our Shetland 2000 range is an ideal solution. Spun from carefully graded
and sorted natural coloured raw fleece that does not contain any dyes or
other artificial colourings this range of yarns is about as 'eco friendly'
as you can get.
With this in mind, it is important to note that no two batches of this yarn
will be exactly the same colour and, if you intend to produce a garment(s)
using it, we strongly advise purchasing sufficient to complete your project
as we may have problems matching it later.
*IMPORTANT*
We have made every effort to ensure that our shade card is reproduced as
accurately as possible.
Please be aware that your computer may display our shades differently from
the original and that
slight variations may occur.
Available in 9 different naturally occurring shades.

Part of the dictionary definition of organic is "something that occurs naturally" but to define what is organic in relation to Shetland Sheep, their wool and other products, is open to debate.
A significant number of Shetland 's sheep graze on natural heather
clad hills and peat moors occasionally supplementing their diet by visiting
the seashore at the ebb tide and grazing on exposed seaweed which is rich
in essential vitamins.
Shetland 's organic or natural status is best summed up in a quote by a prominent
Shetland farmer that was published in "Shetland Breeds Ancient Endangered
and Adaptable" (Posterity Press) and is as follows;
"The whole thrust of my life has been towards
production whilst maintaining, of course, the environmental assets that
we have in Shetland; the diversity we have in our breed, in the birds and
plant life, that's what we have been about.
We use very little chemical fertiliser. The total amount of chemicals used
in Shetland is almost un measurable. If Shetland were in the middle of
England, we would be called organic."
We are, however, reluctant to classify our products as organic for the following reasons;
Note
Our parent company, Curtis Wool Direct, can employ an organic scouring process
that has been approved by the Soil Association at their "Howarth
Scouring" premises.
For almost 40 years we have promoted Shetland Wool
by highlighting the natural environment afforded by our unique island setting.
An example of this was a marketing presentation in which we used a fairly
typical island, Papa, that lies off the west coast
of Shetland. The presentation consisted of geographical location, environment,
breeding program, animal husbandry, wool fineness and photographic presentation
from both land and sea.
