ON GREEN SELF-HELP

Article in theLady Godiva - December 1988

We welcome a new lady contributor, ELLA SALMON, whose speciality is homely advice to the poor - with particular emphasis on the great benefits of self-help. Ella has always helped herself and can vouch for the results .

HOW TO KEEP WARMER CHEAPLY. Invest (we are none of us too poor to invest, if only a small sum) in some postage stamps and stationery. Then write letters to get yourself on as many mailing lists as possible. (your friendly neighbourhood postperson may be able to advise you because that person will have a pretty good idea of what mail is regularly delivered to a lot of people). Soon you will receive lots of what left-wing clever dicks call 'junk mail'. This can all be used as body insulation. If you wear some of it next to your skin (being careful to choose non-glossy items for this) you will save getting your underwear soiled (let's face it, the old, like the young are 'accident prone' so to speak). Two savings will follow from this: 1) on fuel for heating - the paper insulating your body will achieve that - and 2) on fuel and soap powder (you will use less of, having less washing of underwear). Also, if you have an open fire, the used paper will help to keep it going overnight.

If you don't have a fire but you do have a small garden, the paper can be cut up small and mixed with garden refuse and kitchen waste to make a compost heap. Paper rots slowly but it does rot when mixed with other things that are more easily composted. This brings me to my second hint or tip.

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR DIET CHEAPLY. Many of you eat too much carbohydrate - because it is cheaper than protein. Here is a way to increase your protein intake almost free of cost. Just think! What is a very obvious fact about a well-managed compost heap? I will tell you; it is crawling with earthworms. These are very muscular creatures, rich in protein and can easily be eaten mixed with such easy-to-cook foods such as spaghetti. Wash the worms (that you can sift from your heap) and pop them into boiling water with the spaghetti. They won't be hurt - any more than crab or lobster in similar circumstances. You will have a protein enriched dish for next to no extra cost - just that little extra work.
