MORALITY and the SPELLCHECK

(A letter to The Scotsman - October 1992)

Following the 'Diary' item about the vagaries of spelling-check facilities in word processing, I asked my Amstrad to accept four four-letter words of ill-fame. These words, which my schollfellows and my parents alike told me - albeit for different reasons - were dirty words ....... were not accepted for saving but my clean machine kindly gave the following suggested alternatives:

are, cult, funk, shift.

I can only commend Mr Alan Sugar (of AMSTRAD) for his loyalty to sound moral values in his word processing products; I can almost forgive him for saying, in 1986 "If there was (sic) a market for mass produced nuclear weapons, we would market them too."
