What is Laura's Cavern? (I hear you ask)

Laura's Cavern was formed in 1992 to encourage Beauty & The Beast fans who are also interested in Sign Language. There have been as many as a hundred members world-wide including many cast etc members; Armin Shimerman (Pascal), Caitlin O'Heaney (Brigit O'Donnell), David Greenlee (Mouse), Edward Albert (Elliot), Jay Acovone (Joe), Judy Shimizu-Martinez (Tunnel person), Ritch Brinkley (William), Roy Dotrice (Father) and David Schwartz (producer)

Myhr (Jamie) is (are?) also (a) member(s)!

We can boast TWO more members who are also talented artists:-
Kevin Barnes and Sandy Chandler Shelton

Many members live outside the UK, mostly in The USA but also in Australia, Germany, Italy, Malta, Portugal and Norway. I keep a folder of information about Sign Languages of other countries sent to me by members as well as an album of photos of members at cons etc.

There have been presentations by Cavern members at cons. In 1993 at Masquerades we Signed Sonnet 29 which was spoken for us by Armin Shimerman. At Masquerades '94 and at Masques '94 several members Signed scenes from Beauty and the Beast to the recorded soundtrack. On other occasions I have Signed a song or two.

There have been Sign Language workshops at many conventions, both in England and the USA since the first one at A Moment In Time in Manchester in May '96. These workshops cater for absolute beginners as well as those with some Signing skills.

The group is co-ordinated by me, Sue Haley. Lately, my time has been so limited that I have been unable to keep up with newsletters and add photos but all previous newsletters are posted here and the gallery pages contain many pics from earlier conventions.

Past newsletters:

newsletters 1-4
newsletters 5-7
newsletters 8-10
newsletters 11-13

I finished my degree course (Sign Language and Deaf Studies) at Wolverhampton University in June 1997 and I now work as an 'educational interpreter', supporting Deaf students in their college studies. For a while I also worked at a job club helping Deaf jobseekers in their search for work.

I also belong to a group called "Music In Motion"...... We are sign-singers and we put on concerts and sign songs in shopping malls to raise funds to help local Deaf Organisations.
