Myhr's Message:
FAVORITE CHILD
Most of the conventions I do, I'm just one of many guests, usually hired so Myhr can emcee the masquerade. Rarely do I get to do Q&A sessions, even tho I've found that most people have a lot of questions about my artwork, about the makeup techniques, and even {god forbid!} about me! If you have any questions {or comments}, please write me in care of the Lair, and we'll get them answered in future issues...email or snail-mail addresses are listed elsewhere in this newsletter. Today we'll tackle one of the most-asked questions:
''which is your favorite painting of all you've done?''
Well, let me start out by using a most-used response:
"which of your children is your favorite?"
So far I have done 108 pieces since my first in September of '92, which isn't too shabby considering I work a full-time AND a part-time job! There are some that I cranked out simply because they needed to be done...those you'll rarely see. There are others I did that, at the time, seemed to work but in the end seemed to be missing one little spark. Then there are those that came from the heart, that grabbed a piece of my soul...those you'll see at every show {although you'll see prints because the originals remain on my wall!}.
The first one I did {"Heidi Two"}* is special because, well, it's my first! I didn't really know what I was doing, experimenting with ideas and techniques, and things just kind of fell into place, one of those "happy accidents" that occasionally touch your life!
Another favorite is "Neelix"*, the strange alien crewman on "Star Trek: Voyager". You can see in this one a very strong influence from my mentor, Keith Birdsong...this is the type of "personality portrait" that Keith is famous for {he does most of the Star Trek bookcovers and collector plates, and he's the main reason I'm painting today!}.
But there's one piece that I keep looking at in wonderment and, to this day, I STILL say "damn, did I do that?". That piece {#35} is "Incessant Longing"*. I was dating a beautiful lady at the time {many of you got to meet Vikki at the L.A. Beauty & the Beast convention}, and she had wanted me to paint her as a vampire {sensual but deadly}. I chose a dynamic pose from the shooting session we did, and I went to work. But I was trying too hard and got a brain freeze...the piece just wasn't happening. I was growing more frustrated...
Vikki picked another pose from the session {more sensual than deadly}, gave me a supportive smile, and the rest is history. That piece has become the most popular, the most requested piece I've done. Technically, it's an awesome piece. Emotionally, it's a powerful piece. Personally, it's a very special piece that contains a lot of my heart and soul {as well as Vikki's}, and the original painting will eternally have a place on my wall. Every time I look at that painting I'm reminded of a very special time of my life...and it also serves as an inspiration, a level of quality to maintain, to surpass!
As happens in the real world, our lives took different paths, and she has since married and become the mother of two beautiful kids. But she will always have a special place in my heart, and I believe it's evident in that painting. Obviously, the public can sense something very special about it!
Whew! Kinda got a bit off track there, but it goes to show ya how things can really click when you put your heart and soul into something!

Remember, if you're dying to know anything about the artwork, the Myhr-thing, or even me, just send your questions in care of Sue at the Lair, and we'll deal with them in future issues.
The very best to you and yours this Holiday Season!

My first encounter with Myhr.
by Rita Davies - Wales

The Vegas convention in 1994 was not only my first ever American con but also my first trip abroad. Our friends took us to see the Grand Canyons just before the convention started, and on our return Tom and I rushed to sign in at the members desk. Things were really going with a swing and we were also caught up with the excitement. We were on our way to our room when Gwen Lord approached me and asked if I had met Myhr. Well I didn't have a clue to who Myhr was and when Gwen turned me round and said Rita meet Myhr, I was surprised to see this slim person with the face of what I assumed was a cat. It was a great experience standing by this gentle creature having my picture took. Then all of a sudden Myhr nestled his head on my shoulder and started to purr. Well I tell you I didn't know what to do, to run or just be silent and hope it would go away. Then suddenly I had a fit of the giggles (Myhr has this affect on people) then he was whisked away by another lady and I was left with a feeling of loss and put it down to jet lag.

Of course like always Myhr worked very hard the entire weekend and several times when I did meet up with this strange love-able character, he did the same thing, purr on my shoulder. It became the highlight of my visit and I was sorry that I was leaving and may never see him again. But of course it wasn't the end of my encounters, since then I have met Myhr and his soul companion Jamie on several occasions and I am so proud to say that they have become my dear friends. I am so glad that Gwen introduced us. Perhaps Myhr doesn't remember our meeting in those early years but for me I will never forget... My first encounter with Myhr

Come on now folks…

... ... tell me when you first met Myhr… or Jamie

... ... ... ... and what you remember most about it

Include a snapshot if you have one please - it will be returned to you. ~ Sue ~

An Invitation to Myhr..............by Denice Morgan

Last year I was making out my oldest daughter's invitations for her birthday party. She was really excited naming off names to me. She told me the list and turned to watch a movie. As I filled out the invites, Lyric grabbed one of the invitations and started to write. I asked her who the card was for and she looked up at me and said, ''This one is for Myhr''. (One thing you have to know is that she has never met Myhr or Jamie. Just seen their pictures.)

I watched her try to make the letters for the invite and then grabbed another as I saw the frustration fill her eyes. I took the crayon out of her hand, and sat her on my lap. I picked up the pen and asked her what she wanted it to say. She told me and I wrote it down (Unfortunately I don't remember because a lot has been happening to me, but Jamie may still have it. So you can ask him). The next day I sent the cards out. Lyric made sure I didn't forget Myhr's, as we walked to the post office with her little sister.

A couple of weeks later, I checked the mail and there was a special card to Lyric from Myhr. I took it home and told Lyric that she got something from Myhr. She was excited and jumped on the couch saying read it to me! I read the card, as it said how sorry he was he wasn't going to make it, but he hoped she has a Happy Birthday. Lyric took the card out of my hand and said, "Wow, he sent me a card," and she put it in her scrapbook.

As we were getting ready for Lyric's sister's party. Lyric was looking through the invites to DeElla's birthday. She ran over to me and said, "Mom, you forgot one!" I looked through the envelopes and I didn't see a name missing. I l ooked at her and asked who's name was missing. Lyric said that Myhr's name was missing. When Lyric mentioned Myhr's name, DeElla started dancing around singing Myhr's name. I laughed as I watch DeElla and told Lyric that Myhr was busy that weekend at a con. Lyric said okay.

Now a lot of you are wondering, why is she telling us this now? Well when I sat down to make out the invites to Lyric's party this year, she wanted me to send another to Myhr. I asked her why she was doing that when around Halloween, Myhr is usually very busy. She said, "I just wanted to make sure he remembered when my birthday was and that no matter how old I get, he will always be invited to my party." I smiled at her and told her, that Myhr knows when her birthday is and he will probably never forget. As for the forever invite, well you never know, Myhr can pop up when you least expect it.
