| MORE QUESTIONS... |
|
The Q&A is a popular feature of guest appearances at conventions, and it looks as though we could turn it into a
regular column here at the Lair...we got a slew of questions after the last issue! And what's interesting is that the
questions are not the kind you would hear at a con Q&A, they're a lot more unique, more...personal!
Our first question, in reference to the Lair staff descriptions in each newsletter, asks: ''Jamie, what is an 'artsy-fartsy kinda guy', do tell?'' Well, ''artsy-fartsy'' is American slang, a descriptive term very much like ''fancy-schmancy'' or ''hunky-dorie'' {hey, I don't know who comes up with this stuff, I just live here!}...I tried to find an exact description on the internet but came up blank. Basically, an artsy-fartsy person is someone who can do a lot in the arts {painting, sculpture, music, acting, etc}...a Renaissance Man. ''If you won an all-expense paid trip to anywhere in the world, where would you choose to go?'' That's a toss-up, between England and Japan. I've been fortunate enough to guest at some cons in the UK, but I could never fit time into my schedule to follow up on my interest in Naval History, primarily the period of Nelson {around 1800}. I've always been ''haunted'' by medieval Japan {around 1600}...I guess I may have lived in those countries during those times...??? ''Where do you get your ideas for your art?'' I'm primarily a photographer who happens to paint. I'll photograph a model in a variety of different poses, then when I flip through the processed prints, one or two of the photos will strike a spark, and suddenly I'm not looking at the photograph but at a finished painting with elements of the photograph. The same with media stuff {BEAUTY & THE BEAST, X-FILES, XENA, etc}... |
I'll look at a photo in a magazine and I'll "see" a painting with the major elements of the original photograph...
I'm using other references to piece together a view to illustrate a story or idea {I consider myself an illustrator,
not a graphic artist, not a portrait artist}.
And while we're on the subject of media paintings... I get a lot of requests to paint "so and so" from "such and such tv show or movie". I try to avoid that because of potential copyright problems and because I'd much rather work from my own reference materials...I only paint a particular actor if I'm doing a con where that actor happens to be a guest, or if the subject of the con is a particular show {like a Star Trek convention}. And, believe it or not, there are some actors who would prefer I not sell paintings {or prints} I've done of them because either they are embarrassed or they're pissed because I'm making a few bucks off of their image. And I can understand it...it would feel pretty weird if someone made money selling artwork of Myhr that they did without my permission {while at the same time I would feel very honoured!!!}. So, please, no more requests to paint "so and so"... One last question for this issue: "What do you like most about doing cons?" Hmmm...I'd have to say the people. It gives me the chance to connect with old friends and to make new ones, and when there are little kids, Myhr gets to hang out with others his own age! But the cons also provide the opportunity to travel and see new places, as well as force me to escape the real world for a while and take a vacation {even if the vacation is only 3 or 4 days}. I've been blessed...I've met a lot of fabulous people and I've gotten to see places I never would have if not for the cons! Jamie |

Press Release:
P.N. Elrod's short story, "Myhr's Adventure in Hell," will be in on your bookstore racks
sometime late in 2000 or early 2001. It will be published by DAW Books and appear in their
paperback anthology, "Assassins Fantastic."
Her first public reading of the comedic story took place at VisionCon in early February, with Myhr in the panel room. Audience reaction was extremely positive, especially if you want to count the guy who fell out of his chair laughing. |
| Pat says:
Background on story: I have been wanting to put Myhr into a novel since last year's Aggiecon
when a bunch of us guests went out to dinner. It flashed on me how much fun it would be
to team Myhr, my eccentric roommate, myself, and my bud Morgana, and set us all loose on
the unsuspecting universe.
The original premise is that Morgana, a sorceress, "beams'" Myhr in from another universe to be her love slave. Poor Myhr had to escape out of sheer exhaustion! He's taken in by a cranky wizard named Terrin, who runs a detective agency. My character is this hapless writer who gets caught up in the action like one of Dr. Who's companions. |
