| Things change...the weather, television program schedules, relationships, our
looks. Hopefully, the changes are for the better
( air conditioning), sometimes they're not (BEAUTY & THE BEAST, Third Season). But things don't improve if you don't try
change. This club is changing again, in part, as an effort to improve, but also, in part, as a result of changes in people's lives.
Third time's the charm, they say!
Maranda has had a rough year, as most of you know. Trying to juggle family things, and personal things, and club things was just a bit much. She's decided to move on, to make necessary changes in her life. I've had a challenging year, with more and more responsibilities, and less and less time to handle everything...no way I could run the club, too. Sue Haley found herself at home with some free time, after completing her schooling (more changes!), and she started playing with website design...she put together a site to promote her sign language group, 'LAURA'S CAVERN', and added a few pages to honor a certain cat-guy. Well, to make a long story short, this site grew to become the official Myhr's Lair website, and I was so impressed, I spoke with her about helping with the club. She immediately jumped in to rework a few things, formed an informal staff to coordinate things on both sides of the Atlantic (for those who don't know, Sue lives across the pond, in Merrie Ol' England), and is in the process of restructuring the whole club. On behalf of Myhr, Jamie, and the members of Myhr's Lair: Thank you, Sue!!! But please keep in mind this is a club...Sue needs the support (and help of any kind) to keep this going, so please stay in touch with her with ideas, submissions (photos, poems, reviews, etc), and anything else you might think is interesting. All the addresses for contact can be found elsewhere in this newsletter. I wish Sue all the best in this crazy adventure, and I thank you, all the members, for your patience through this whacko year. As the wise old man said to the young student, "Eh, what was the question?" |

Jamie: I've done a lot of conventions and so I've sat through a lot of Q&As and I've got a pretty good idea of what is
good in a Q&A but I have NEVER done one myself... an official one. So I'm a 'Q&A virgin' so be gentle please!
...Okay! So... a brief overview for all of you new kids, my name is Jamie but my alter ego is Myhr, who tends to get me into a lot of trouble and I pay for it the next day. Jamie is also an illustrator. The art thing and the Myhr thing all started at the same time and it was all pretty much by accident; it's just kind of taken off and I've ridden with it and had a lot of fun with it and I hope all of you have fun with it too. I've always been kind of an artsy-fartsy kinda guy. When I was a little kid I would play sick just so I could stay home and r ead and draw... and my mom still pulls out little crayon drawings that I did and shows them to everybody and she kind of, I guess, thinks that I still do stuff like that. (laughter) But as life went on I tried different things. I'm smart enough to have a regular REAL job to pay the bills and provide the security but all the fun stuff I've done has always been; I try something and if it works I continue, if it doesn't I drop it, which, if my dad was still alive it would drive him nuts because he was always the type that if you start something, you finish it! But I'm the type where if I start something and it's not working (chuckle) why do I finish it? You know, just drop it and try something else. So throughout the years I've sung in rock bands, I did that for about ten years and then moved on to photography and had my own glamour and fashion business for about fifteen years and then I moved on to illustration. Working at a TV station, especially a Paramount station that carries Star Treks and stuff, you get a lot of fandom watching and so the station would do Star Trek marathons and specials and back in '89 I was experimenting with some friends with special effects make-up. And I always wanted to do something really cool like a scaly lizard-like alien or something but it would be hard to do with the beard so... I had to change that idea and find something that I could work the beard in with the make-up so a lion-man just seemed kinda natural. At first I wanted to do a werewolf but it was hard to do the longer snout and as I kept sculpting it kept looking like a cat so I figured ''Oh hell it can stay like that...'' But everywhere I went at Halloween costume contests and stuff people would go ''Oh Vincent!'' ''Uh.. No, I'm not Vincent. I look NOTHING like Vincent!'' and so over the years Myhr has gone through four different versions, each time becoming more and more cat-like. And once I finally got pretty much established in the design we started using it on our television station to emcee Star Trek marathons and things. And a friend of mine wrote a script proposal for a children's show and the whole back story was that Myhr was from the future and a product of bio-genetic engineering and stuff, so in one of the marathon wrap-arounds Myhr and his buddy are broadcasting from the future but the signal is cutting in on the current television series and so we were interrupting programming to show Star Trek episodes, which in the future were classic films! And the Star Trek fans picked up on it and started inviting me to conventions where I could talk about television programming and stuff. And there was one convention where the scheduled emcee couldn't show up... And they came to me and they said ''You're in television. You can do this.'' And I said ''NO I can't!'' Because Jamie is very shy and quiet and withdrawn but Myhr draws all the deep dark sides out! And so I said ''Well... I'll do it if I can do it with the cat-face on.'' And so consequently I started getting invited to a lot of other conventions. And in '93 I did a big international Star Trek convention ... And there were a lot of people there who were also B&B fans and they were telling me about this Austin convention. And I said ''Well, I would love to go down but I really don't have the time...'' but they kept asking and so I said ''Okay!'' ... So I flew down to Austin and like a lot of the fan-run conventions, it was their first time.... So they knew that I had done conventions and "Oh! You're in television. You can do this." and the people that were at the Trek convention were telling them about what had happened two weeks before. So they came to me and said "Can you help us out?" and I said "Sure! I'm here. Why not?" So I did the masquerade at Austin and they turned it into a party and had a lot of fun! And... they've been asking me back ever since and suddenly I find myself with this adoptive family and it's just so cool and I feel so much a part of this that now the B&B conventions are, like, top of the list, prime importance in my schedule and even though I'm cutting back drastically on conventions (I'm only doing a couple a year), I make sure I do the B&B cons because to me this is not a convention, it's a family reunion... ...For a while it was a little uncertain as to whether or not I was a guest at this one and people were e-mailing me and writing me letters and making phone calls asking if I was gonna be here. And I said ''Well, I haven't been officially invited as a guest but ''either or'' {even if I'm not officially invited} I'll come as a fan'' because I can't miss these cons now and... ...I thank you for sharing the weekend with me. |
| There will be more of Jamie's Q&A in the December Newsletter - sorry about the small type-face but the entire transcript is SEVEN pages!! I wanted you to see a reasonable chunk of it this time. - Sue |
