Myhr's Message: Here it is, nearing the end of '97, the end of the millenium is fast approaching! End of year is the busiest time in the television business, hell, ANY business... it's the Holiday Season!!! Bah Humbug! Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of Peace and love and sharing... I just can't stand the crass commercialism that tends to bring the worst out in people. I'll give someone a gift when I damn well please, not because you're "supposed to" at Christmas time. It's not a gift when it's "expected". I'm not going to be "extra-nice" (read phony) to someone just because it's the holidays and it's "expected". |
![]() Giving (while not expecting to receive) and being nice should be done all year 'round, not JUST because it's the holiday Season. So, that's why the "BAH HUMBUG"...I'm really not a Grinch... I'd just rather have the "HOLIDAY SPIRIT" year 'round! I'm poo-pooing the CONCEPT of the holiday season, not the SPIRIT of it. I'm sure Christ wasn't too concerned with how many sales were made before the end of the year clearance! |
So, let me say, I hope all of you have a safe and joyous "holiday season", and I love y'all the whole year 'round!
I look forward to being able to spend time with a lot of you, and for those I won't see in person, know you're in
my heart, tossing a cold one with me!!! It's going to be an adventurous year, and I'm glad you're here to share
it with me!!! (Hey, be sure to share your cool adventures, too!!)
I also want to say a special thank you to Sue and Jackie for being there, through some good AND some bad times this year! I love you guys!!! : ) So, a Merry Bah Humbug to all, and to all, a good flight! Myhr |

JAMIE: Q. What is your favorite time of day and why? A. Dawn...it's quiet, except for the birds. Q. When you were young, did you have a burning ambition & if so what was it? A. I wanted to be a helicopter pilot (got hooked on a 50s tv show called "Whirlybirds") Q. How do you like to relax? A. Put on some mellow music and read (I must add I rarely do that anymore...too many things going on) Q. What kind of music do you like/hate? A. I hate opera and twangy country/western. I'll listen to most anything else, depending on my mood (right now I'm listening to "Sauve, Sauve" by B-Tribe.) Q. What makes you lose track of time? A. Having a great time with someone. Q. Do you like to watch/play any sport & if so what? A. Nope...too many things going on. Q. What makes you angry? A. Incompetent people Q. What is your favorite food? A. Sushi Q. Of all the people you ever met, who do you admire the most? A. Ruth Merry...she's accomplished more with her immobility than most who are fully mobile. Q. Who, living or dead, has had most influence on your life? A. Keith Birdsong (illustrator, Star Trek bookcovers and collector plates). He saw something in me I didn't think I had...the ability to capture personalities with an airbrush. |
MYHR: Q. What is your favorite time of day and why? A. Dinnertime! Why? duh. Q. When you were young, did you have a burning ambition & if so what was it? A. Yeah, but some ointment cleared it up real quick! Q. How do you like to relax? A. Babewatch Q. What kind of music do you like/hate? A. I love anything you can dance to...I hate anything that grates on the ears. Q. What makes you lose track of time? A. Time travel Q. Do you like to watch/play any sport & if so what? A. Babewatching Q. What makes you angry? A. People who leave the toilet seat down. Q. What is your favorite food? A. Sushi Q. Of all the people you ever met, who do you admire the most? A. Steven L. Sears (co-executive producer and writer of "Xena")...He's worked his way up through the ranks to a top position in Hollywood, he's talented in a lot of different areas, and he's STILL a heckuva nice guy! Q. Who, living or dead, has had most influence on your life? A. Jamie Murray...I wouldn't be half the man I am today if not for him! |

Artists Reception - Sunday 26 October 1997
There was an Artists Reception at the GALLERIE EXOTICA on 26 October 1997. Jamie attended because the gallery specialises in erotic artwork and Jamie has eight paintings on display there. When I asked if he wore his tux, Jamie answered, "Nope...just wore blue denim shirt, black jeans... nothing fancy... (gotta "look" like an artist!! ;)" I asked, "So what does an 'artist' look like? Paint in his hair... an ear missing... ?" The reply was, "Well, that certainly works! Usually, when you're at a party or formal function, and everyone is in suit & tie, the one NOT in a suit & tie is an artist." There were seven or eight artists at the Reception - ranging from sculptors and painters to photographers - and a wide variety of artwork on show. One of the co-owners of the gallery is well-known artist Leroy Roper and he really likes Jamie's work, which is why he asked him to exhibit at the Gallery earlier this year. (Jamie missed a previous Reception when he was at the Reflections Convention in July) Jamie paints from photographs of women but Leroy does it the other way around... "Actually, Leroy paints the woman, then a hairstyle is done to match the design painted on the woman, THEN a studio backdrop is painted to fit the character he created." Finally Leroy photographs the woman in front of the background to produce the finished 'artwork'. The other co-owner is the publisher of a Texas newspaper which reviews what is to be found in the erotica industry. The gallery is in a "Gothic" neighbourhood and many of the sixty or seventy visitors to the Reception were dressed in that style. A good friend of Jamie's, author of Vampire novels P.N. Elrod dropped by to give encouragement and drew a small crowd herself! So... were any of Jamie's paintings sold? Four pieces have already been sold since July but people don't buy paintings at the Reception. It's essentially for viewing and to give the opportunity to meet and talk with the artists themselves in a relaxed atmosphere. The GALLERIE EXOTICA is strictly "appointment only" so that potential customers arrange for a private viewing at a later date. (report by Sue Haley) |

Q: When did Myhr get his name?
Jamie: For a couple of years I was doing Halloween costume contests and stuff as 'the lion man.' A producer/director friend of mine wrote a script proposal for a children's show and he came up with all the names for the characters and he named it Myhr... My last name is Murray so it was like "Duh?" but he spelled it Myrrh like the incense but I changed it so that the 'r' ended the word and then that way when I signed it I could do like a lion's tail on the 'r'. So I changed the spelling on it and then I find out... this man sent me a photo of a street sign, I think it was in Nashville, Tennessee where it's 'Myhr Drive' and it's spelled the way I spell it! So... we pitched the script idea and at the time Paramount was going through this whole transition thing with Viacom and so all the budgets were frozen and so that idea kinda died but Myhr continued. And that's where Myhr comes from, a derivation of my real name with a twist on the spelling. And then sometimes if I get a beer or two in me Myhr suddenly becomes Myhrrrrr! Q: Do you have a personalised license plate? Jamie: No! No. No, I don't have a car phone. I don't have a pager. I don't go in for that stuff. Sorry! Also, too, it's like... I tend to be a very private person and so I don't like to advertise that stuff. I don't know how else to put it. It's like... No, I don't have a personalised license plate. Q: Is Myhr a wildcat? Jamie: Actually the back history that we wrote for Myhr, he was crossed with a bobcat. [inaudible comment...] For those of you at the back she said "That's why there's no tail." Actually it's.... never mind, I'm not going into that! Q: [inaudible] Jamie: For the first couple of years I was doing it I kept it real quiet as to Jamie and Myhr and it was a lot of fun having the cat-face on and going into the artshow, standing behind people as they were critiquing the artwork. Or... walking around as Jamie and listening to their comments about my performance the night before. It was a lot of fun but then as the years went on and we got to be more of a close knit family it was like the secret got out... and (chuckle) it's not as much fun any more! Q: Do you do other kinds of conventions? Jamie: Oh yeah! Matter of fact a few weeks ago I did a big Star Trek thing.. for those of you who are familiar with Star Trek, the international organisation is called 'Starfleet' and it's world-wide and they've broken the world up into regions and it's very militaristic they have their ranks and their procedures and you have to go off to school... it's pretty weird! But Region 3 covers all of Texas and Oklahoma and Louisiana and I've done so many local Star Trek things there that Region 3 has kind of adopted me. But a few weeks ago I was emceeing the banquet, they surprised me with... Myhr was given a certificate: he's the very first ever 'Ambassador At Large' of Starfleet and Jamie was awarded Honorary Captaincy and so that was kinda cool 'cos I went right past Ensign... and I didn't have to take any of the qualifying tests to go with the rank and suddenly I'm a Captain and I get to use the Executive Washroom and I hang out with all the officers... So, even though I'm not in Starfleet, I'm in Starfleet! But yeah I'm pretty locally known in Star Trek because of all that but I do a lot of general Science fiction fanzine conventions, primarily because of the artshows but as word spreads around I'm getting hired more and more to emcee at conventions, but like I said, it's tough to work it into the schedule, it's physically draining and terribly exhausting to do it so I'm cutting back quite a bit and being very selective as to which cons I do... but THIS, like I say, will always be top of my list. |

This is the second of three reports - I have edited the text slightly to fit the space available. Some of the questions & comments were inaudible - I elected NOT to guess. There will be more of Jamie's Q&A in the March Newsletter - Sue |

"God created the cat that man might caress the tiger." There is something untamed about the cat that appeals to the primitive in all of us. Those who love cats are prepared to go to that wilderness that lies deep within and face their fears; those who hate cats are reacting to that fear, unable, or unwilling to recognize their baser nature. All cats, from the stunted Singapurra to the mighty lion, move with a fluidity and grace that is beautiful but terrifying to behold. The house puss, playing with a ball of yarn, and the lord of the jungle pursuing the his prey are so similar in their grace while they exercise their deadly art, that we are fascinated while we secretly shrink in terror. No matter the size, the potential for violence is the same. There is a secret thrill in being in the presence of a cat. Any previous experience warns you that the sleeping cat is really one claw away from hayhem; yet, time after time we try to lure the cat to our lap, to rub the tummy, scratch the chin and stroke the fur. We love to flirt with danger and dance on the edge of safety, laying ourselves open to attack. Man loves the cat because he feels strong in whatever power the cat allows him. Woman loves the cat because she is allowed into the wild and dangerous world where the cat rules. For one short time she is permitted to indulge her secret fantasies of stalking her prey in green leafy silences; she is as feral as the cat she observes and no one is the wiser. The cat has an appeal for man that is almost primitive. It is not necessary to understand it ~ just enjoy it! Helen Pawlowski ~ St Louis |
