Forgive me for using this front page section of the newsletter to send someone a personal note,
but I just HAVE to say Thank you! to James Cameron.
I'm sure most of you by now have seen "TITANIC" {at LEAST once!}...if not, it's a definite "must see". I. myself, have seen it 4 times {and with my schedule, I don't have TIME to go see movies!}...not because I'm a film editor by trade, or that I'm a part-time actor, or because I think Cameron is one of the top five directors, or because he happens to be married to that BEAUTY & THE BEAST Babe, Linda Hamilton. Nope, I was dying to see this flick because I'm a TITANIC buff. Have been since 1978 {actually, I've been fascinated by the story since I was a kid, but my interest was piqued when I read the Clive Cussler book, "Raise The Titanic". Then they made a movie of the book in 1980... I immediately joined the Titanic Historical Society {yup, I was into it long before |
Dr Robert Ballard discovered the wreck in 1985 and made it "fashionable"!}.
In 1987-88 I built a small model of the wreck of the Titanic, using Dr Ballard's book on t he discovery of Titanic as a reference. I then wrote a how-to magazine article about building the model, which included a short history of the beautiful liner. World renowned Titanic historian and illustrator Ken Marschall read the article, and contacted me through the publisher... he and some friends were putting together a documentary about Titanic, and wanted to know if I would build a larger model to be used in the documentary. Pretty cool, eh? {By the way, Ken was the historical visual consultant on Cameron's "TITANIC", and Cameron based a lot of the scenes on Ken's paintings!} Ken sent me many personal items to make sure the model was as accurate as possible, and I spent nearly two years working on the project. As it turned out, the documentary was never |
completed {though parts that were already shot have been used in other documentaries on Titanic} ...since the model was not going to be used for the film, it sat for a few months in a museum exhibit on the east coast... now it's collecting dust in my workroom. For years I've waited for someone to make the definitive Titanic film...the most famous ones were entertaining, but not historically accurate. Jim Cameron created a work of art--almost a cruise line commercial!--that allows you to feel as if you've walked the decks! The detail is amazing...you would not believe how much is there that the casual viewer never realizes, but Titanic buffs smile and get goose-bumps over! So, if we cross paths at a convention or artshow, and I keep bringing up that wonderful movie, now you know why! Thank you, Mr C for sharing such a wonderful vision! Oh, by the way, if anyone runs into Kate Winslet, could you have her call me? I have to let her know we're getting married!!!!!! Myhr |

| ''The Administrator pauses to address the crowd... ...A brightly draped figure steps into frame, a bullhorn by his side. The shot somehow reminiscent of the opening gunfight scene from Gunsmoke. The figure raises the horn and issues a challenge in the form of a riddle: (''What's the difference between a squad of the Order's soldiers and 200lbs of lime jello?). The Administrator, clearly not amused, dispatches his security force to apprehend the interloper. They give chase and the figure leads them on a wild chase down alleys and around corners. Around one such corner, he ducks out of sight, to be replaced somewhat further ahead by a similarly dressed compatriot. This type of switch happens once or twice more allowing the pursuee to always be fresh while the security team gets slower and slower. Finally the chase leads through an abandoned factory and out a door. As he exits, we see a sign on the door that reads ''Door locks when it closes.'' Paying no heed to the sign the soldiers charge through the door only to find themselves in a tiny blind alley. The door closes behind them and they find themselves trapped. At a sound they look up and there is our crew, the last runner being pulled up by a rope. Out comes the bullhorn, the riddle is repeated then the answer (''you couldn't fit another soldier in this alley, but there's always room for jello'') as a ton of lime green jello is dumped from above, courtesy of THE IMAGINATORS.'' | Here's where The Imaginators meet Myhr... ''They decide to continue exploring and as they move into a hallway outside the room they are ambushed by an assailant with a samurai sword. The shadows make it difficult to get a good look at him. He presses the attack at Zach, never actually striking him, but coming close enough to keep them all backing up. At last he has them pinned in the corner and he raises his sword as if to strike. At this, Merritt throws up his hands and as he does so, he exposes his Rainbow Resistance patch. When the assailant sees this he pauses and demands to know where they had gotten it. Seeing they were in trouble even if he was with the government, the Imaginators admit to being members of the Underground movement. They ask if he intends to turn them in. In reply, the mysterious attacker lowers his sword and reveals his own patch. He then remarks that he would probably be about as welcome in The Order as Merritt, and stepping into the light they see that he too is a victim of the Bio-war, it having given him a distinctive cat-like appearance. A collective sigh of relief is released and introductions are made. The swordsman, MYRH, tells the Imaginators that he was the film librarian at the station, when, with the fighting approaching it had been abandoned. The change was already occurring in him so he had decided to stay behind to keep watch over the film vault... '' |

Q: Is it strange to have a fanclub?
Jamie: Oh MAN!!! The Fan Club is so weird! For a long time people kept approaching me about doing a Fan Club and I said "Why??" It's like, I'm not a celebrity, I'm not a movie star, I don't do, well to me I do a lot but I don't do that much that others would be interested in... and for a couple of years I was talking people OUT of starting it. And then it got to the point where I had so many people writing me and fanmail was piling up and so many things to do and it was put forward to me that a fan club could filter out a lot of the stuff and help keep things organised and it pointed out all of the 'pros' and a few of the 'cons' but mostly the 'pros' of a fan club so I said "Okay, fine! You go ahead and do this but I'm too busy to get involved... You got my blessing. Fine, go ahead and do it." So they started the Fan Club and I kept getting sucked in more and more and then... we had some re-organisation and it's been real interesting... the 'Fan Club' and now there's the 'Website!' And that thing has life of it's own it keeps growing! And Sue's got photographs and soundbytes and I've got a computer at my office at the TV station and I just recently got a computer at home and the TV station computer doesn't have a sound card and Sue has soundbytes! She's taken clips, soundbytes from videos and stuff and put it on the page and so every time my computer clicks into the page and I want to check out to see what's going on the soundbytes try to load and it kills my computer! So I can only check that website when I get home. But it's, yeah, it's a strange feeling having the Fan Club and the Website and the whole bit - Cool!. Q: What does your family think of all this? Jamie: This is going to sound really weird but I really don't have much time with my family. I'm the oldest of five boys and from what I understand, the bits and pieces that they pick up, they're pretty excited about it. I've got a niece who sees me as some Hollywood celebrity type guy. She wants me to keep sending her autographed pictures... It's...er... I really don't know. Of course Mom is proud. She pulls out the artwork from when I was a |
kid. She brags about the jelly-filled doughnuts
I used to make when I was ten but as far as the current stuff, I don't know I guess she's still stuck in the past... but honestly I
don't get that much contact with them.
Q: Did you go to college? Jamie: Actually, I did a few years at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. When I went to school I was going to be an architect. Growing up, my Dad was an electrical engineer and so he was really pushing the technical side and so I would draw up house plans when I was a kid - and I think I was twelve when my Dad got me a subscription to Architectural Digest as a Christmas present. And the counsellors at High School were not counsellors, they were like gym teachers and stuff who would sit and talk to you but knew nothing about counselling, and they told me "Oh you don't need Math" So, my first semester at college I nearly flunked out because I was not prepared to pursue architecture. And so I went to a really good counsellor at college who looked at my hobbies and interests and not what I had accomplished at High School and she suggested television broadcasting. So I got into that and at the time they were just starting with the degrees programme and most of the courses were in radio, which I had no desire to do. And so I was struggling through that... to pay my way through school I was working part-time at the television station on campus because you had to do a certain number of hours working in that field for your degree programme. And so I had decided early on that THIS is what I wanted to do, I wanted to work at a television station as a cameraman! And so I was working for a tech degree, busting my butt and then it got to the point where I really had to make more money so I got this job offer at the NBC affiliate, so I started working at the TV station. And then I got to realise that here I am putting in all this time, money and energy to get a degree so I can become a cameraman at a television station and I'm working as a cameraman at a television station to pay my way through school! So... I dropped out of school, I never finished |

Jamie/Myhr in the Northwest? Well I'm working on it... from Denice Morgan What type of response have I had up here (WA) with trying to get Jamie/Myhr to a Northwest Convention? Well let's start with Myhr, I used to go to 3 or 4 cons a year and every year my friends and I would laugh at how things are handled (especially at the Masques). Don't get me wrong, the dear ladies behind the scenes work really hard, it's the stuffed shirt (someone in a 3-piece suit) stumbling around the names, or the voices with no face (the DJ's) that I'm talking about. Anyways we all got together and I started talking about Myhr. I told them that if we could get Myhr to a con here then no longer will it be the audience and the Masquers, but he would bring us all together. They liked the idea, because we never have had a masque at our cons that pulled the audience and the participants into one. Also another fact that came up was, most Masters of Ceremonies don't want to be seen around the con goers. I think they think we have a terrible disease. It's true some of the con goers are very scary, but they are only human. Most of the MoC would hide from all of us. When I told them that Myhr mingles with Con goers, goes to the dances, and sometimes goes out to the local Malls, they said "let's get him here!" Now for Jamie. Well most of the con goers here love great artwork. I took some of my con friends to a computer and showed them his beautiful artwork. They were shocked with the realism of his work. They asked me if he too was a people person, and I told them, well if you mean does he too like to just wander around at a con not worrying about a schedule. I said yes, you can usually (time permitting) find him wandering around taking pictures etc. Surprisingly I have never met Jamie/Myhr, but I do consider him a good friend. We exchange email on any updates we have gotten from any of the concoms. Hopefully we can get Jamie/Myhr to a con here and as soon as I hear some good news I will be posting it on my page devoted to Jamie/Myhr. If you have a computer you can find it at the address below and then click on Jamie/Myhr ~ Denice ~ Denice's webpage is at: http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/8982/index.html. Thanks Denice - Let's hope one of the cons up there is big enough to afford a guest all the way from Texas! If they do... it will be added to Myhr's schedule on the Lair website as soon as it's confirmed. ~ Sue ~ |
