Holy Ghost Crowthorne and Immaculate Conception Sandhurst
- Parish Pastoral Council -
Draft Minutes of the meeting of the members
of the PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL
held on Tuesday 6 February at 7.30pm in the Sandhurst Parish Centre
Opening prayers and reflection led by Mike
Present: Margaret Derlacki, Ann FitzPatrick, Lawrence Gaffney, Angela Greenwood, Sheila Isted, John Kavanagh, Jim Nairn, Paul Page-Tickell, Gerry Picozzi, Martin Stubbs, Mike Withers (and Sue Niblett)
1. Apologies for absence
Apologies received from Shirley Hayden.
2. Minutes of previous meeting
The Minutes of the meeting of 28 November 2006 were approved and signed by
Chairman, subject to the following amendments : 5.5.4 (Any other business)
Diaconate letters - Paul had finished his studies in May.
3. Matters arising from previous Minutes
3.9 Pastoral support for schools - it was confirmed that the youth leader working in Crowthorne is not a Churches Together in Crowthorne project. The leader is supported by the Crowthorne Baptist Church and some of the Wokingham churches.
4. Larger Pastoral Area - Mike is still to arrange a meeting of the Catenians' Group. A new course is available from CaFE entitled "This is My Body", which would be appropriate for use on the next run of CaFE sessions. It costs approximately £70 and the PPC will consider purchasing it. £200 is surplus from the last CaFE course to help fund the next one.
Ann agreed to accompany Mike to the next LPA meeting on Tuesday 27 February.
The web pages for the LPA have been updated. The Deanery has changed to LPA Area 7. There are links to other churches within the LPA and also to some churches around the periphery of the LPA area. There are also links to other parishes within the Diocese and also a link to the Diocesan Yearbook. It was suggested that, should a combined Newsletter be compiled in the future, it should go onto the web site. It was felt that publishing the Mass times of the other churches within the LPA would not be very reliable because the priests are not always available and often have the same day off, generally a Monday. Martin added that Douia Abbey and Farnborough Abbey usually hold Mass early on Monday morning
5. Update on Christmas calendar - the PCC thanked everybody who had helped in any way over the Christmas period. Around 40 people attended the ecumenical Christmas Service at the Coffee Spot, which was enjoyed by all. The PPC thanked Margaret, Mike and Gilly Withers for running the service, with special thanks to Paul for the moving reflection on the antiphons of Advent. Margaret has the service dates for 2007 that have been allotted to our Catholic parish.
6. Parish Pilgrimage (8-14 October) - there are still some places available. These could be offered to the wider LPA if they are still not filled in due course.
8. Fairtrade - Gerry asked for volunteers to help run the stalls during Fairtrade Fortnight (26 February to 11 March). Stalls will run at both churches after all weekend Masses on 3rd, 4th, 10th and 11th March. Sue will organise a £250 cash advance for Gerry to buy produce to sell.
9. Baptismal Team - had recently run the first Baptism Preparation course, with three sets of parents and godparents attending. The CAFE dvds had been used to great effect.
10. Justice and Peace - the Burma Orphanage Appeal now has a dedicated bank account and parishioners will be notified by the Newsletter, should they wish to donate. It was clarified that Chidamoyo is also a parish charity. 17 February is Justice and Peace Day.
12. Parish Census - ongoing.
13.1 Developing Skills for Leadership - Mike has attended this course, which is half-way completed with three sessions left to go. John Butterworth is attending the course in Tilehurst. Two more courses will follow, one in Bournemouth.
13.2 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity - the PCC thanked Rosemary Smith, who gave a very inspiring speech from the pulpit.
13.3 Social Evening for PCC members and partners - will be this coming Saturday (10 February) after the Vigil Mass at Sandhurst. Father Adrian will be attending. A raffle might be run, with proceeds to charity.
4. Arrangements for Lent and Easter
Vigil Mass - Paul will organise the rehearsal for this.
Palm crosses - Sue will ask Margaret Rapley to make these. Margaret Derlacki will be on standby.
Children's Stations of the Cross - will be at 12.00noon at the Immaculate Conception Church on Good Friday 6 April. Ann will ask Katherine Fitzpatrick to take this.
Benediction - Father Adrian is not available on Sunday afternoon throughout Lent to take Benediction. It was agreed that Sheila would take Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on 25 February, 11 March and 25 March at 3.00pm at the Immaculate Conception Church.
Holy Thursday Mass - for personal safety reasons, it was agreed that it is not safe for a lone female to be left to lock up the church after the evening Mass and that a male Eucharistic Minister should stay on to help.
Morning Prayer of the Church - will be at Holy Ghost Church only, on the morning of Good Friday and Holy Saturday. Mike would co-ordinate this.
Lent Groups - Angela advised that there are five Lent Groups and explanatory leaflets are in both church porches. Father Adrian and John Butterworth will be giving a series of talks during the Friday evening RCIA sessions. John will also be organising the Passover Feast.
5. Diaconate - Paul reflected on his Diaconate journey over the past year and advised that he had met with Father Jim Joyce three times and also his spiritual director and the diocesan deacon.
6. Coffee Spot, Sandhurst - volunteers are still needed at the Coffee Spot to work in two hour shifts. There are two full-time paid employees. Margaret reported that the parish still owes around £50 towards the expenses of last year's Songs of Praise and Freedom Day. She will follow this up at the next management meeting and Sue will pay on receipt of an invoice.
7. Parish magazine/Ann retiring - Ann will be retiring from the PPC in the summer. She is prepared to publish the summer edition of the Parish Magazine but asked that someone take it over in time for Christmas. Mike also advised that he will be standing down as Chairman in the summer but is prepared to stay on the PPC. All present were asked to consider taking their turn as either Chairman of Vice Chairman for the coming year.
8. Diocesan Archivists - defer to later date.
9. (added agenda item) Social Committee - there will be a Cheese and Wine Evening on Saturday 3 March. Tickets will be £7.50per head, plus raffle. There will be a parish BBQ/picnic on Fathers' Day, Sunday 17 June after Mass at Our Lady's School. It was agreed that a 'farewell and thank you' function will be arranged for Father Adrian who is due to finish at the parish at the end of April. Mike will say a public thank you at all Masses on Father's last weekend. Collection envelopes will be put out on the weekends on 22nd and 29th April, to be returned to the parish office. Explanation to be put in the Newsletter.
10. Any other business
10.1 HCPT second collection - is to be arranged before Easter. Sue will liaise with
Katharine Fitzpatrick re dates. £100 has already been sent to this charity this year
.10.2 Parish Helpline - it was suggested that the parish might be able to run a helpline
to take ease the pressure on Father Kevin. Currently, all callers are dealt with through the office. The Diocese is considering running a course for counsellors. It was mentioned that people do not normally counsel within their own parish.
10.3 Ordination of new Baptist Minister, Sandhurst - was on Sunday 21 January.
Gilly and Mike Withers attended this service and commented how friendly and family orientated their community is.
10.4 PCC Structure - is displayed on church noticeboard at Corpus Christi. Should
we be doing the same here?
10.5 Keenan Rooms, Corpus Christi - are available for use by parish groups.
10.6 LPA - it was suggested that the all the PPCs within the LPA should get together
socially during the summer and that all the youth should meet.
11. Date and time of next meeting
The next meeting will be on Tuesday 17 April at 7.30pm in the Sandhurst parish
centre. Closing prayers to be led by Sheila.
Meeting closed at 10.00pm
