Using a Psion 5 or 7 to connect to Zetnet using MessageSuite v1.52 (series 5) and the version off the PsiWin 2.3 CD. written by Tony Walker (tony.walker@zetnet.co.uk) ================================================================================== Firstly install the Psion Messaging Suite onto your Psion. This will install some new options for you in Control Panel. Also, obtain a copy of the Logon script I have written for the Psion, and transfer this as a text file onto your Psion using your PsiWin software. If you got this file from Zetnet support then the logon script should have been given you as well. Setting up your modem ===================== Select the "Modems" icon on the control panel. Select your modem. If yours is not listed then select Hayes compatable (Series 5) or General modem settings (S7). From that same "Modem settings" screen, select the "Edit" button. This will bring up a dialog box with four tabs. On the "Modem" tab. Select the "Speed" using the following rough guidelines. 115200 for 28800 and faster modems, 57600 for 14400 and 19,200 modems, and 19200 for slower modems. This is the speed at which the computer can talk to the modem, NOT the speed the modem talks over the phone line at. Make sure the "Connect using" box says "Serial" (S5) or "Cable" (S7) if you are connected via the external cable, "Infrared" if you are talking to a modem in a mobile phone, or "PC card" (S7) if you are using a PC Card (PCMCIA) modem. On the "Initialisation" tab, enter your initialisation string. Most modems will be quite happy using AT&F as the initialistion string in all 3 initialisation string boxes. On the "Handshaking" tab (S5) or the "Advanced" tab (S7), select Hardware for flow control. You may need to experiment a little with the "Terminal detect" and "Carrier detect" check boxes to get a reliable connection. I have found with my Pace 33600 modem that both boxes needed to be unchecked. On the S7 you need to select whether it is a fixed line (normal phone line) or a mobile phone connection. Set the "Loudspeaker" and "Volume" settings on the "Options" tab according to your own preferences. Once you have set up the 4 tabs for the modem settings to your liking, press the OK button in the bottom right corner, then press the OK button in the "Modem settings" box. This will return you to the control panel. Setting up your connection ========================== 1. Using the standard Zetnet lines Select the "Internet" icon on the control panel. This will give you the "Internet service settings" screen. Select the "New" button. Click on OK in the "Create new internet service" box. This will give yuo a dialog box with five tabs. On the "Service tab", give the service a name like erm....Zetnet. Connection type is Dial-up. Tick the "Use smart dialling" check box. In the "Standard phone number" box. Select "country" and overtype this with "44". Overtype "Area" with "845" (note-no leading zero). Overtype "Number" with "0798090". Now select the "Account" tab and uncheck the "Manual login" check box. Leave the other three boxes blank. On the Psion 7 version I had to enter a single space character as the Username otherwise it wouldn't let me save the settings. On the "Addresses" tab uncheck the "Get DNS address from server" check box. In the "Primary DNS server" box enter "194.247.47.47". On the "Login" tab tick the "Use login script" check box and make sure the "Port settings" are "8 databits,no parity,1 stop bit". Make sure the "display window" checkbox isn't ticked. Now we need to get the logon script into the network settings Open the Psion 5's wordprocessor with an empty or new file, leaving the "Network setings" boxes open. From the "File" menu select "More" then "Import text file". Change the directory and filename to suit where you copied the logon script file to earlier, then press OK. Go to the very start of the text and, using SHIFT and the cursor keys, select all of the text right to the end of the script. Press CTRL-C to copy it. You can now close the file and return to the Internet settings boxes (will show as System" on the tasklist). There will already be some text in the large box at the bottom of the "Login" tab. Select all of this using the SHIFT and cursor keys, then press DEL to leave the box completely empty. With the flashing cursor still in the same box press CTRL-V. This will copy in the script file text you copied out of the wordprocessor earlier. You now need to edit your personal logon details. All of this information apart from your password can be taken from either your Registration certificate, or the "System" tab in Zimacs setup. The password will be the same as the one you use with Zimacs and Windows Dial-Up Networking (DUN). The last bit you need to change is the password bit. NOTE: Remember that if any of your details has capital letters in it, these must be copied exactly. On the "Advanced" tab leave "Enable PPP extensions" unchecked and leave "Allow plain text authentication" checked. Once you are happy with each of the 4 tabs in the "Edit network service" dialog box, you can select the "Done" button in the bottom right hand corner. You can also then select the "OK" button in the "Internet service settings"dialog. This will return you to the Internet Service Settings panel where you select which ISP you want to use. The one you have just set up should be selected as the "Current Internet Service". Select OK and you will be returned to the control panel. If things have been set up correctly then by simply entering a valid web address into the Web browser, or selecting send in the e-mail program, it should bring up a dialog box allowing you to connect to Zetnet. ================================ 2. Using the 56k lines at Zetnet ================================ Internet icon in control panel New button Based upon standard settings - click ok Service tab. Name=zetnet 56k Dial-up Use smart dialling Ph no. 44 845 0798638 Account tab. Manual login unticked Username to usernumber Password to normal Zetnet password Addresses tab. Both "Get IP address from server" and "Get DNS address from server" should be checked. Login tab. "Use login script" should be unchecked Advanced tab. "Enable PPP extensions" should be unchecked. "Allow plain text authentication" should be checked. Click the Done button and go back to "Current Internet Service" selection screen. Should have "Zetnet 56k" selected. Click OK to go back to the control panel. ====================================== 3. Setting up your Zetnet mail account ====================================== NB. Your mail account at Zetnet must be set up as a POP3 type account if you wish to receive e-mail on your Psion. You can still use it for sending e-mail if you use Zimacs to receive mail - just fill in the "Account" and the "Outgoing" tabs. Open the Email program on your Psion and select "Add new account" from the "Tools" menu, then "Email" from the little sub menu that opens. On the "Account tab the settings are:- "Account name" should be give a name by which to identify the account on your Psion. I use my own name for this. "Your name" is the name you wish to appear on an e-mail you send to say who it is from. "Email address" is your Zetnet e-mail address. Mine is tony.walker@zetnet.co.uk. "Set as default account" tick the box if this is your main or your only e-mail account On the "Outgoing" tab:- "Email (SMTP) server" should be set to "mail.zetnet.co.uk" "Auto send on opening" will try to send any waiting e-mails the moment you open the mail program. I leave this unchecked. On the "Incoming" tab:- "POP3 server" should be set to "mail.zetnet.co.uk" "Mailbox login" should be set to the bit of your e-mail address that comes before the @ symbol. i.e. Mine is tony.walker "Mailbox password" should be set to the password you agreed with Zetnet Admin for your POP3 account. "Confirm password" just requires that you enter it again in case you've made a typing error. You don't need to set anything in the section opened by the "Advanced" button =========================================================================================== =========================================================================================== Hope you enjoy surfing and e-mailing with your Psion. If you find any errors in the instructions then e-mail me. The script should be bug free, as I set it up like you would by editing my details. Finally don't blame me for the size of your phone bill especially your mobile's bill . Tony Walker tony.walker@zetnet.co.uk
