They play a traditional style of Scottish, Irish and Shetland music, often using their own arrangements of tunes. Three part harmony is a feature and every girl is given a chance to shine! They are accompanied on piano by Joyce Reid, mother of Jenna and Bethany.
Bethany and Gemma won the ensembles Trophy at the Orkney Folk Festival in 1995, with no help from Jenna at all ! Filska cut their debut album “Harvest Home” in 1995. They regularly play at the Folk Festival and Fiddle and Accordion Festival in Shetland and hope to take up their first ‘away’ invitations in Scotland and France in 1997.
As well as playing as ‘Filska’ , the girls are members of the ‘Shetland Fiddlers’ Society’ - also known as the ‘Forty Fiddlers’. They enjoyed a tour of Germany in 1995 as part of a European folk art prize won by the society.
They have been guests of Robbie Shepherd on his Sunday morning radio programme ‘The Reel Blend’ in April 1996 and took part in Phil Cunningham’s Friday afternoon programme as guest artistes in August 1996.
Filska’s favourite engagements are festivals and concerts. They look forward to providing their own arrangements of many tunes associated with Scotlands’ most famous poet at Burns suppers in 1997.
