Once the Scouts have mastered the Reef Knot, there is a whole host of knot which can be taught. For example:-

This knot is basically the knot that you tie your shoes with but with only one loop. Presumably the real name for the shoe tying knot is a double slip reef. It is useful for temporarily tying ropes together.
