LEVEL 2

Introduction

An introduction to Wimbleball Sailing Club with a safety briefing and resume of WSC Club Rules

Rigging

Understands how to rig according to weather conditions. Able to reef ashore.

Ropework

Can tie a Bowline, clove hitch and a rolling hitch.

Sailing techniques & manoeuvres

Has basic practical understanding of:-
  • The Five Essentials
  • Leaving and returning to a beech, jetty or mooring
  • Coming alongside a moored boat
  • Knows basic rules of the road.
    Aware of leeshore dangers, sailing in close company with others and man overboard recovery.

    Launching & recovery

    Has knowledge of boat storage ashore, launching and recovery.
    Able to paddle a sailing dinghy and row a boat around a short triangular course, come alongside and make fast.

    Capsize recovery

    Has practical experience of one method of righting a boat and knowlegge of at least one other method

    Racing

    Understands the course and starting procedure.

    Sailing theory

    Points of sailing and No Go Zone.
    How a sail works.
    Basic advice such as tide tables etc.
    Effect of wind &tidal flow.
    Speed over ground with/against tidal flow.
    EStuaries & harbour mouths.
    Informing someone ashore.
    Local bylaws, permits, overhead power lines etc.
    Dangers of hypothermia.

    Meteorology

    Sources of weather foecasts. When to reef. Understands Beaufort Scale.

    Clothing and equipment

    Importance of personal safety, clothing, buoyancy and basic equipment depending on boat and sailing area.

    Emergency equipment

    First aid kit, flares etc. How to attract attention & summon help. Action to help others.
