Using Zetnet With Your Atari Compatible
The Trouble With ISPs
It's a sad fact that most internet service providers in the UK today don't
have a clue when you ring them and ask for an account with any computer
other than a Windows PC.
The Mac is next best, some ISPs can send you software, and some can even
tell you how to set it up.
Anything else, though, and you're on your own.
Zetnet, however, decided that it might be nice to be able to support other
platforms, if not directly, but indirectly. Haveing a self-help userbase
support for the other machines.
Here, then, is part of the information required for using your Atari
machine for the job.
Zetnet's Details
Don't worry if this makes little sense; It's not required learning.
- Full SLIP or PPP dialup access via a BT local rate "Lo-Call" 0845 number.
- POP3 mail.
- Filtered NNTP News. Optional full access with proof of age
- Optional HTTP (Web) Filtering/Cache service (I recommend this be turned off for Atari access).
- Dynamically allocated IP address on dialup.
My Recommended System Requirements
- TOS 1.4 (Rainbow TOS) or better.
- 14.4 kbps or better modem*.
- At least 2Mb RAM (4Mb for anything other than basic ST).
- A hard disc drive (theoretically possible to run off a single DD
floppy, but really not recommended).
* NB: If you're using an ST or Mega and a 28.8 kbps modem or better,
you'll need to perform some surgery on your MFP driven serial port to get
it to work at speeds higher than 19,200 bps. If you're not sure - settle
for a 14.4 kbps modem.
Software To Use
Initially, the software I supply to get linked to Zetnet is my own
Zetnet Specific package of the amazingly impressive
STiK system: The Zetpack.
Don't be put off by the name. This package allows full access to the
internet with really quite up to date software and in some cases flashy graphics....
REMEMBER ask for the Atari Zetpack on signup.
Please Note: If you are joining from another ISP, and are taking advantage of
Zetnet's waiving of the setup fee, and you have a working version of the WWW pack, then Click Here to gain access to the Zetnet STiK Conversion Kit.
Once up and running with STiK there is an advanced option that is not quite so simple to install
but does provide you with a very comprehensive unix-esque link to the net.
That is the Oasis/NOS combination in conjunction with NOSHELL.TTP.
Oasis/NOS can now also be used on their own with a PPP connection, although the World Wide Web
is not accessible with such a setup. Again more information available here
I don't supply either of these packages, but will support setup and use by e-mail once you have the ZETpack in operation.
Why not check what systems are currently known to be operational on ZetNet with the Zetnet Atari Connections List, provided by Roy Golding.
