AICOM

At a meeting held in Düsseldorf on 17 March 1997, 23 persons set up AICOM. The total number of founding members is approx. 50. The association operates nationwide. Membership is direct (as opposed to BDÜ membership). AICOM will have five regional offices (North, East, West, South-West and South). Elections are by postal vote only. The association will be managed by a Council overseen by a Supervisory Board (consisting of the five regional managers and three divisional managers (training, public relations and new technologies). The registration documents have been filed, but the association has not been registered as yet.

AICOM and Bundesverband der Dolmetscher und Übersetzer (BDÜ), Landesverband Nordrhein-Westfalen e.V. resolved at separate general meetings held in Cologne on 3 May 1997 to merge the two organizations. AICOM will absorb the former North Rhine-Westphalian BDÜ chapter. The merger will take effect on the date on which AICOM is entered into the register of associations.

AICOM codes still under discussion include a code of good practice for translation sub-contracting and a quality assurance code. AICOM also plans to set up an arbitration board to deal with commercial disputes relating to translating and interpreting jobs. Key activities will include lobbying in Brussels and in Bonn, liaison with universities offering translation and interpreting courses, training, public relations, conference organization, collection of statistical data, publication of a journal, fight against malpractices, provision of bad debt information to members, promotion of research and development and support of in-house translators and interpreters.

AICOM intends to apply for FIT membership upon registration.
