TAIN INDUSTRIES

Local Industries

I suppose that, apart from the Tain Through Time exhibition which no person should miss seeing, and the sport that is available, the main tourist attraction must be the TAIN POTTERY at Aldie Water Mill just to the south of Tain off the A9 road.

Apart from the working water mill about to be connected to the woodturning shop, there is a pottery, basket weaving above the gift shop, and weaving itself.

You will be made most welcome, whether you come by car, bus, motorcycle, bicycle or even on foot.  Tours of the pottery are available, you can watch the pottery being hand thrown or pressed, baked in a temperature of 1280 degrees Celsius and thereafter having decorative designs hand or brush applied. One of the modern day benefits of the pottery is that it is microwave, oven, freezer and dishwasher safe.

Watch the basket weaving as it progresses and listen to the soft local Scottish voice carrying out a running commentary for your pleasure. Do not be afraid to interrupt the workers who will be pleased to explain what they are doing and tell you about anything that you may have missed. And then there is the gift shop!! My own advice is not to take any cash, cheques or credit cards with you <grin>. You won't be able to buy anything, of course, but if I had two or three thousand pounds, I would be a great impulse buyer.

There is a traditional fresh cheese manufacturer in Tain . The factory is famous both nationally and internationally.  You will be made welcome Monday-Friday from 10am to 4pm. when there is free tasting of the products. The factory is at Blarliath, Shore Road, Tain. Tel: 01862 92034

There are of course many other industries but who wants to visit, from choice,  an industrial estate, a supermarket or a pub or hotel?  Well, if you do want those things, they are all well signposted, so get out of your car and walk!!
