About Us - History

Today the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international Catholic organization of lay men and women who seek, in a spirit of justice and charity and by a person-to-person involvement, to help those who are suffering - “No work of charity is foreign to the Society”. The patron of the society is St. Vincent De Paul.

About Us - Who We Are

The St Vincent de Paul Society was founded on 23rd April 1883 by a young law student ( Frederic Ozanam) in Paris, who sought, along with some friends, to put the teachings of the Church into practice by relieving the suffering of the poor in Paris.

Although SVDP is an organisation founded by youth, the society in Scotland is dominated by a much older age range. We are seeking to harness the energy and dynamism of young people by promoting youth involvement in the Society throughout the country in much the same way as the Society has done in England, Wales and Ireland.
