St. Peter's Church, Holton Le Clay

St Peters Church, Holton Le Clay

St. Peters is a small church with a length of less than 70 feet, standing on a small hillock in the centre of the village. Although the village today has a population of over 4,000 for most of its life the church has served a community of fewer than 300 people. The11th century tower, surmounted by a 14th century belfry, is connected to the nave by a tall, narrow, round-headed arch. A similar Saxo-Norman chancel arch was removed in 1850 to make way for the present sham Early English arch. It is believed that despite successive rebuilding the ground floor plan has remained almost the same since the late 12th century. The font is of the Norman 'drum' type with rope moulding on the rim. The most interesting plate is early 19th century pewter, consisting of two alms dishes and a portable font. Holton has the stump of a medieval churchyard cross similar to that at nearby Tetney and the heavily restored cross at Waithe.
