READINGS
Acts 12: 1-11                                           (S.M. p. 746; R.C.L. p. 1103)
Herein is emphasised the importance of S. Peter for the whole church, for it was not he who was in charge of the Church in Jerusalem, but James (not the apostle, James, who had already been martyred.)

Responsorial Psalm 125                        (R.C.L. p. 1104)
R.   Shew your goodness, O Lord, to those who are good [ and to those who ] are true of heart.
or
Responsorial Psalm 34: 1-8                    (S.M. p. 746)
R.   The Angel of the Lord rescues those who revere him.

II Timothy 4: 6-9, 17-18                          (S.M. p. 747; R.C.L. p. 1105)
These are some of the final words written by S. Paul: he has finished the course, victory is assured, henceforth there is a Crown of Righteousness to all who long for the Lord's appearing.

S. Matthew 16: 13-19                              (S.M. p. 748; R.C.L. p. 1106)
Here Simeon receives his new name, ‘Peter’ (or ‘Kephas’, ‘Petros’, ‘Petrus’) and is given some kind of authority in the Church, symbolised by the ‘claves regni cælorum’ and the power 'to bind and to loose.'

Acclamation: 3
