Zechariah 9: 9-12
(S.M. p. 321; R.C.L. p. 299)
The Messianic King is foreseen entering Jerusalem riding on an ass, to emphasise the peaceful nature of his reign.
Responsorial Psalm 145: 8-14
(S.M. p. 321; R.C.L. p. 300)
R. I will exalt you, O God my king, [ and bless your name for ever. ]
Romans 7: 15-25a
(R.C.L. p. 301)
S. Paul tries to explain why we do wrong. It is not we, but sin that dwells in us. It is Jesus Christ alone who can rescue us from ‘this body of death’.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Blest are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
for revealing the mysteries of the kingdom to mere children..
Alleluia!
(S.M. p. 322)
S. Matthew 11: 16-19, 25-30
(S.M. p. 322; R.C.L. p. 301) DE
Zechariah’s prophecy is fulfilled in Jesus. The mysteries of the kingdom are revealed not to those unable to abandon fixed ideas, as the Pharisees, but to mere children. Jesus frees us from the burden of the Mosaic Law: his burden is light.
