The Gospel records Our Lord’s first prediction of his impending Passion & Resurrection. Note that the three imperatives of verse 24 indicate that the self abnegation and taking up of the cross are single acts, whereas the following is to go on day after day. The sight of criminals bearing their cross-beams would have been familiar in Roman-occupied Judæa.
