ELAINE

General

Elaine This photo was taken at what was supposed to be a surprise party set up by my work colleagues for my fiftieth birthday, no surprise but very nice all the same.
One unusual aspect about this photo is that I am not wearing clogs.
Apart from the Swedish style of backless clog, which is familiar to a number of people I have a collection of traditional British clogs with laces, clasp or buckle fastenings, which I wear in the winter.
The problem is keeping up with the rate at which I wear out the rubbers on the heels. The really traditional metal soles and heels would be noisy and impractical (and dangerous).

Background

I was brought up in the farming area of the East Riding of Yorkshire. One of my grandfathers was a farmer and carried out contract work with steam traction engines, threshing corn and timber work. My other grandfather was a joiner and wheelwright and was a trapper in the gold rush area of the Yukon before the first World War.

Work

During the swinging liberated 60s I dropped out of Art College and trained as an Occupational Therapist and have worked continuously, apart from maternity leave, ever since.
Before anybody starts making remarks about «working mothers» I must point out that there has been a national shortage of qualified Occupational Therapists, particularly in the field of single handed Local Authority posts covering rural areas. Elderly people and people with disabilities are dependant on OTs for the provision of equipment and home adaptations.
OTs are employed by Local Authorities, Health Trusts, Charities or are self employed, and although the training is across the board (currently a Degree Course but was a degree equivalent Diploma when I qualified) the work can be in any one of a number of disciplines (Physical Disability, Learning Disability, Paediatrics, Mental Health, Occupational Health etc.).

Hobbies

I tend to have splurges on hobbies and currently my main interest is computer graphics, both vector and bitmap. I spend hours «doodling» with various images and programmes, but Steam Traction and Classic Tractors must also be included.
I'm also working on my pre/post retirement project.
The next pages show some examples of backdrops/wallpapers.
