Relaxing in the garden.

The card is dated 1915.

A group of officers or NCO's sit round a small table on a lawn, against a backdrop of bushes and shrubbery. Some are reading, and there a few glasses on the table.

A gathering in the mess?

A group of German officers/NCO's? gather round one end of a long table (in the mess?), some standing, some seated. There are some glasses of beer on the table.

Another photograph in the mess.

Seated and standing, a group of officers/NCO's gather in one corner of the mess for a posed photograph.

At the end of a festive dinner!

Many officers/NCO's are seated and standing around a table covered in bottles and glasses. A box (cigars? cigarettes?) sits in the middle of the table, and a floral decoration can be seen at the far end.

Enjoying a game of cards.

A small group of officers/NCO's sit round a table in the mess, playing a hand of cards. A few others stand behind them, looking on. A couple of glasses and a newspaper can be seen at the near end of the table.

Catching up with some reading.

The writing at the bottom of this card reads "Schulze, Dünaburg, August 1918".

A man in uniform sits, reading, at a small, lace covered table which is covered in books and papers. A single bed is in the corner of the room behind him, and a long coat hangs on a hook on the wall.

Dünaburg (now called Daugavpils, previously called Dvinsk by the Russians), is in what is now Latvia. It was occupied by the German army for a large part of 1918. The photograph of Schulze, above, was presumably taken during that occupation of the town.
