Programmes on ITV have often been critised for being combinations of cheap, unintelligent, populist or unimaginative. Of course there have been programmes that fit some of these statements (and really why not), but there have been many that are the complete opposite. ITV for example provided the first schools' programme, the first real coverage of a by-election and the first religious programme other than a relay of a service.
